    The D/V Chikyu (D/V means drilling vessel; Chikyu is Japanese for “Planet Earth”)  is 210m long, 40m wide and 130m from the keel to the top of the drilling derrick;  the derick itself is 70m high! (Remember a meter is ~3 ft.) What does that mean for thescientists?  There are 4 floors of laboratory space for geology, chemistry, and microbiology.

    Here’s a picture of the drilling derrick taken from the helicopter pad (with an oceanographer for scale!). Today we continued with safety training. Tomorrow we start the science planning to determine which samples will be collected where and by whom so that we are ready when we get our first sediment cores
